To make for a smooth, safe and fair journey, please make sure you have the following gear on you:

  • Appropriate bag. Handlebar rolls and saddle bags are advised, as they provide the most comfort. A rucksack can get heavy on the shoulders and the backside over time.
  • Helmet. For your own safety, no discussion.
  • Lights on your bike. That means red rear light and a good front light. Flashing LED’s are no good at the front – so think torch. You will be riding in the dark along unlit roads. You may encounter banks of thick fog and you really don’t want oncoming cars not to be able to see you.
  • Mobile telephone. At the beginning of the race you will receive a list of phone numbers including the ones of the organising team and the people in charge of the checkpoints. Most important is that of the support vehicle, which is the first to call in case anything goes wrong along the road in between the checkpoints. Please call 112 in case of serious injury.
  • Food and drink. Food will be available at every checkpoint. However, make sure to also have food with you on the go and most importantly: enough to drink –that you have either brought yourself, or picked up along the way during breaks and checkpoint timeouts. Keep in mind that there will be sections of more than 80 km where there are no checkpoints.
  • Tools with at least a puncture repair kit, spare tubes and a pump.
  • Maps of the route you expect to follow. At the start you will receive copies of street maps for the cities you will visit, marked with the addresses of the checkpoints. Besides that, you should bring your own national maps for the route between the cities. It is of course advisable to study the route between these before you start the race.
  • Clothing appropriate to the expected weather conditions. Remember it can rain at night and it will feel colder when you are tired.
  • Cycle computer. Your cycle computer will be checked at start and finish. Strava is also possible but make sure you can track the whole ride with your battery!!
  • Money.
  • Basic first aid kit.


SAFETY ADVICE

  • is advisable to not ride alone, since if something goes wrong you can rely on the support of others.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Stay hydrated, don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  • Eat before you get hungry.
  • Take your mobile phone with you and keep it on you at all times, so you can be contacted if necessary.
  • If you don’t have proper lights (which we will check at the start) you will either have to buy them at the start or be excluded from the race.
  • There will be a support vehicle following the route which you can call in case of emergency. If you happen to become stranded between cities with a broken frame – call them. Not that you will be offered a new bike, but you will be picked up and taken to the next checkpoint. In case you strand at one of the checkpoints and won’t be able to go on, a sleeping place will be arranged for you.
  • If you have to give up on the way, call the support vehicle. It is important for the race administration to know where you are!
  • You can leave your luggage at the start/finish, keeping in mind you will want to make it back to the finish.
  • Officials in the support vehicle or at the checkpoints will be advised to decide whether you are in a fit enough condition to continue or if there is enough time to realistically finish the reace in time. Sometimes participants are in no condition to make this decision for themselves. Perhaps you have failed to keep up with the time schedule, maybe it is just obvious that you are physically unable to continue safely on the journey.
